In the mid nineties my life sort of fell apart, I got ill and it was put down to my stressful job. It took a year and a six hour operation to put that right and then, just as I was getting on my feet, my wonderful rock of a Dad died. I found myself defeated, burnt out and unable to interact with my previous life.
A very dark period followed. Anxiety, panic attacks and deep depression took the reins and I withdrew and was unable to engage with the world. My family and my best friend prevented me from disappearing completely when I myself couldn’t. I lost all but a couple of my dearest friends who will never know how much they all mean to me.
But they, and good medical intervention got me back on my feet. I began to study part time and after a couple of years got a portfolio together and rather amazingly got a place at university to do a degree!! It was tough being back in education – within a couple of months my tutors spotted a problem. They referred me on and I got my dyslexia diagnosed. This was a hugely significant moment for me and has helped me immensely in many ways since.
There have been many ups and downs, more episodes of physical illness, panic, anxiety and social phobia and at times getting out of the house has been impossible – but my family and friends have been my salvation. After a very scary psychotic episode, my sister got me a puppy and my wonderful Tibetan terrier Mossop came into my life. He has been a huge help to me, ensuring I get up and go out everyday no matter what.
Unable to get back into fulltime work I have continued to do voluntary work – this has been very important to me and part of my keep fit! I was inspired one day by TV’s Dr Raj Persaud discussing how we should learn to keep fit mentally as well as physically. He suggested happiness was the icing on the cake, as it were – much of life is just cake and expecting more is unrealistic. I wondered how I could get more mentally fit!!
Then, rather quietly at first, singing came into my life by way of Liz Martin and her community singing groups. Going to my first session was terrifying and some weeks it’s still a challenge. Not all the group know my entire story, but a few will have heard it maybe once too often! Like many of us I can talk, too much sometimes. Often though, I find it very difficult to talk about the dark times. Everyone in our group has their story their struggles, sadness and challenges. But when we are all gathered and Liz works her magic something very special happens and it always lifts my mood. I belong, I fit in, I’ve been heard and I come away feeling good. Singing makes me feel well.
In recent times my health has been an issue again but having singing in my life has helped me cope. I haven’t been able to do as much volunteer work again and without singing I am sure I could have had more issues. I have welcomed a diagnosis of Crohns disease to my family of ailments. But this time I have kept my head above the water and managed my depression.
Liz and all the members of our singing sessions are great ambassadors for community. Liz in particular, with her warmth, naturally inclusive style and mile wide smile is just one example of the magical mix of Wotton. Through her I was given a connection to Wotton and its hidden heroes. Yes there are more and I hope they share their stories here.
My cake’s pretty well iced at the moment, but when I get low I know someone in Wotton will have some to spare.
Thank you for welcoming me into the project Katie you are an inspiration, along with all the hard working team that make MMiW possible.

(You can see Kay right in the middle of this photo of our London flashmobbers, with a coffee in her hand, and Liz Martin – the inspiring community choir leader she talks about – just in front of her….)

It was this scenery that persuaded us to settle here in Wotton in the sixties, but very soon we realized that there was so much more to the town. Growing up in a stable community with excellent schools our children made friends for life. We mothers also made friends: at the Play Group in Synwell; through the Baby Sitting Circle; at meetings of the Housewives’ Register which organised annual floats for the Wotton Carnival with fun for the children and their parents in the parties that followed.

Now as grandparents we appreciate that life has just got better and better here. The opportunities for every generation to join in cultural and sporting activities have increased year by year. We can make music, dance, practise craft work at Under the Edge Arts or enjoy an amazing standard of professional performance there. The latest films from the UK and abroad are shown at the Electric Picture House, so we have no need to travel further afield to keep up to date.

So, what makes Wotton tick? The answer has to be the community. All the above activities are run by volunteers. Just look at the success of the swimming pool for the latest example.

On a personal note the community was a great support to me during a recent year of cancer treatment, in particular the group of friends who share a common interest in literature and have formed a Book Group which, appropriately, meets in winter. So there you have it, whether it’s summer sunshine or grey winter weather there’s always something to lighten your day if you live in Wotton.

In the UK one in eight women, a massive 48,000 every year, get diagnosed with breast cancer. For some reason I never expected it to happen to me, but then, last year, it did. It is quite a shock to be faced with a potentially life threatening disease at the age of 46, when you still have a family to bring up and assumed you had all the time in the world to do it!

The biggest thing I learnt from the whole terrifying experience was how much the community means to people in my position. I had two operations and spent months at home undergoing chemotherapy. The community rallied round in every way possible; some helped to look after the children, others brought us home-made food, they dropped round, phoned or e-mailed to cheer me up, loads of people sent cards or flowers, and when I did manage to get out people always stopped me in the street to ask me how I was getting on. I was really surprised by the number of other women in Wotton who had been through the same experience, and who could offer me advice and encouragement.

There was something I have wanted to do for some time. I run a technology club at my son’s school, Blue Coat, where we have lots of fun designing and building things such as balloon powered hovercraft and buggies, marble mazes, zip wires, pop rockets, bottle rockets and miniature siege weapons such as ballistae and trebuchets! I wanted to write a little book of detailed, illustrated instructions so that lots of other children could also have a go at the projects.

When I realised I would be stuck at home for months, unable to pursue any of my normal activities, I decided that I would focus on achieving this one thing. All my spare energy (of which there was precious little) went into building prototypes and writing and illustrating the instructions. Again the Wotton community pulled out all the stops, with support and encouragement, ideas, photography, cover design, testing out the instructions and proof reading the manuscript.

After a period which seemed like forever, but was actually only six months, the book and the chemotherapy were finally finished. The book was printed and bound at our local printers, and we launched it at the school. There was an amazing response from the school community – 62 copies sold and loads of the children came to an after school design and build session. We had another session at our other local school, the British School, and a third in the library – the librarian said the place was buzzing; she had never seen it so full!

Our local bookshop in Wotton agreed to stock the book, and it is also available on line (see www.technologyforfun.co.uk for more details). It is a testimony to all the people who helped, and a cheering thought that, even if I were to lose the cancer battle, perhaps some of my ideas and enthusiasm could carry on without me!
